Bean Achievement Guide

Bean is the official How to Fish achievement for finishing the game within one hour. Treat it as a dedicated, current-patch run after you understand the normal route, because community speedrun advice changed after early shortcuts were patched. Use the timer goal as the hard requirement, then test any route, loadout or difficulty advice against the build shown on your Steam client.

01Start from the only official requirement

Steam defines Bean in one sentence: finish the game within one hour. It does not publish an allowed difficulty, a mandatory weapon path, a save-file rule or a list of legal shortcuts. That short official wording is the fixed foundation for this page. Everything else belongs to a dated route test and must be treated as version-sensitive.

Patch 1.0.5 officially closed the bug that allowed travel to locked islands, so earlier direct-Volcano Bean routes are invalid. Patch 1.0.9 later added difficulty modes, while player reports describe current ordered-island runs with different equipment choices. That is useful evidence of a live demand, not proof that every detail applies to your build. Read the update date on a guide before adopting its timings.

02Use a dedicated practice save

Finish a normal route before turning a fresh attempt into a Bean test. You need to recognize quest hand-ins, boss bait and the final Whale chain without pausing to learn what an item does. A dedicated run also makes it easier to identify where time was actually lost. Do not sacrifice a main progression save to a route that is still being tested.

Write down the game version, start time, route stage and reason for every restart. This creates a useful record when an update changes a boss, item or navigation behaviour. It also stops a run from becoming a collection of vague impressions about what felt slow. A reproducible split is more valuable than a borrowed completion claim.

03Protect the route items before saving seconds

The island route contains catch-to-boss-to-hand-in chains, so a fast run can still fail by selling the next trigger creature. Keep special quest bait and unusual bodies separate from ordinary sale catches until the current objective changes. Tuna and Bowhead Whale are reported to begin later encounter chains. The time saved by selling immediately is not worth rebuilding a boss setup.

Open the quest tracker after each return instead of sailing toward a remembered destination. The map route is sequential, and a completed fight does not always mean the hand-in registered. If a cue is missing, verify the current objective before changing saves or buying unrelated gear. This small check prevents a costly detour caused by following an outdated video route.

04Treat community routing as a controlled test

Recent Steam players report different weapon progressions, difficulty choices and boss tactics for a successful Bean run. Those ideas can be tested one at a time, but none are stated in the official achievement record. Pick one route, preserve the same variables for several attempts and note the resulting split. Changing weapon, difficulty and island order together will not show what helped.

Patch 1.0.12 states that the final boss should take explosive damage even when it lands on its tail. That is a documented patch fact, while any speedrun tactic remains a player report. Read the official announcements before using explosive-heavy advice. A clean survival route can be a better baseline than a fragile theoretical best time.

05Separate Bean from other endgame goals

Bean, Handyman and Fishipedia ask for different outcomes. Bean is a timed game finish, Handyman is a bare-hands final-boss requirement and Fishipedia concerns Drip creatures. Trying to combine all three on a first timed attempt adds risk without evidence that the game rewards the overlap. Keep one clear success condition for each run.

After an attempt, save the useful part of the route as a correction note rather than presenting it as universal advice. Include the patch, solo or co-op state and any visible quest difference. That makes the community knowledge behind this page auditable and easier to replace after a patch. It is more helpful to readers than a copied speedrun checklist that silently expires.

What this guide can confirm

  • Steam globally defines Bean as finishing the game within one hour.
  • Patch 1.0.5 officially closed early travel to locked islands; current Steam discussions show live demand for ordered-island Bean routes after that shortcut changed.
  • Patch 1.0.12 changes a final-boss explosive interaction, so explosive speedrun tactics need a current-build check.
