Route order at a glance
Check the quest gate before you sail
Each stop records the quest state that should update the map. It is an original route reference, not a fixed coordinate chart.
| Stage | Map cue | Route gate | Check before sailing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lighthouse | Starting area; the first travel cue follows the opening quest. | Complete the Lighthouse Keeper’s Spider Crab route and receive boat access. | The Keeper has accepted the quest return and the boat keys are available. |
| Forest | Use the new Radar destination after the Lighthouse hand-in. | Collect three leeches, prepare Giant Piranha bait and finish its quest return. | The three-leech task is complete and the Giant Piranha return has been accepted. |
| Desert | Follow the coordinates supplied after the Forest quest completes. | Help the Tourist, use the Carrot route for Pufferfish and complete the hand-in. | The Pufferfish progression item has been returned to the relevant quest giver. |
| Rocks | Read the next location after the Pufferfish route updates. | Use the Tuna and Terrorizing Bird chain, also called Albatross in some reports. | The bird’s distinct quest item has been handed in, not left with ordinary drops. |
| Volcano | Follow the active scientist objective instead of a fixed public pin. | Complete the Whale experiment and its volcano sequence before the final route. | The scientist’s latest dialogue and the quest tracker both show the next objective. |
01How to read the How to Fish map
Use the How to Fish map as a quest tracker rather than a chart of permanent sailing coordinates. Finish the active island objective, protect its route item, and return to the character who requested it. The next destination is then supplied through the game’s navigation flow, so an old screenshot or another player’s bearing is a poor substitute for the new instruction. This guide follows the released story route from Lighthouse through Volcano while keeping patch-sensitive visual details separate.
Community walkthroughs consistently describe a repeating loop: local request, required bait or task, large catch or boss, and a final hand-in. That final interaction matters because a kill alone can leave the Radar unchanged. Before a long sail, read the task wording and reserve inventory space for any unusual quest object. The route table records each step’s stable objective instead of inventing permanent coordinates, distances or marker colours.
02Lighthouse to Forest: unlock the first route
The Lighthouse is the starting area, but it is also the first map gate. Work through the Lighthouse Keeper’s opening task, use the Empty Beer Can route to bring up Spider Crab, and complete the requested return after the encounter. The reward is boat access, which turns the Radar from a useful object into the way to find the next story stop. Do not treat buying gear alone as an alternate unlock because the published route ties travel to the completed quest.
Once the hand-in has registered, use the new Radar destination for the Forest rather than steering into open water. Keep the active objective open during the trip so the goal remains clear when you arrive. If the boat is available but the destination seems unclear, revisit the Lighthouse Keeper and confirm that the Spider Crab step is fully resolved. The separate Empty Beer Can guide is the quickest way to recheck this first chain without mixing it with later-island advice.
03Forest to Desert: finish the leech and Piranha gate
At the Forest stage, the route does not advance by catching random fish or by purchasing a larger engine. Search the forest on foot for the three leech pickups, then return them through the local quest so the Giant Piranha bait step becomes available. After the boss, keep the distinct progression object and take it back to the quest giver before expecting a Desert destination. This is why a player stuck at two of three leeches should search the quest area again instead of sailing away or farming cash.
The map cue for Desert is the result of that completed Forest hand-in, not a universal place to memorize. Scan grass, paths and visible pickup prompts before assuming a leech is underwater, because current community route reports describe it as a ground search. If Giant Piranha is defeated but no new objective appears, verify the held item and speak to the same quest giver once more. Use the Leeches and Giant Piranha pages for the focused pickup and encounter checks rather than repeating the whole route blindly.

04Desert to Rocks: close the Pufferfish route
Desert begins with the Tourist’s request for a catch marked as an endangered species. Completing that exchange provides the Carrot route for Pufferfish, so the boss should not be treated as a random water spawn. Keep moving space around the fight, then protect the visually distinct Pufferfish progression item after the encounter. The next Radar destination follows the return to the appropriate quest giver, not the moment the boss falls.
This distinction makes the map more useful than a bare island list because it tells you what to verify before leaving. If the Pufferfish route is complete but Rocks does not appear, reread the active task and check whether the return item is still in an inventory or on the ground. Current reports vary in casual naming for some boss parts, so the quest response is safer than relying on a nickname from a video. The After Pufferfish guide covers this hand-in as its own question, without duplicating the wider map route.

05Rocks to Volcano: protect the route and repair a missing cue
Rocks uses a two-part progression gate that is easy to waste. The Professional Boss Lure brings up Tuna, but the defeated Tuna is the trigger for the Terrorizing Bird, commonly called Albatross in community guides. Do not sell, cook or abandon the body when the local quest is active; preserve it for the bird encounter, then return the bird’s distinct quest item. That completed hand-in is the reliable reason to look for the Volcano route, not the colour or compass direction of a screenshot.
Volcano then shifts from a simple boss return to the scientist’s Whale experiment and the volcano sequence. Follow the current quest text, keep the relevant creature or return item safe, and use the tracker after each hand-in instead of assuming the map has stopped. If the next cue is absent, first confirm the last dialogue, nearby drops and the currently equipped Radar before changing saves or buying unrelated equipment. Players have reported replacement Radar units near local shops after losing one, but that is a version-sensitive community observation rather than a guaranteed placement.

- Open the active task and compare its exact item name with the item you are carrying or can see on the ground.
- Return to the quest giver who supplied the bait or request; a boss kill is not proof that the hand-in registered.
- Reopen the Radar after the dialogue changes, then check the local shop only if the physical device was lost.
- If the cue still does not update, save normally, return to the main menu and reload the current build before treating it as a permanent failure.
Reporting a reproducible progression issue+
Only use this after the quick checks above fail. Record the game version, solo or co-op state, and last completed dialogue so a bug report can be reproduced.

Evidence boundary
What this guide can confirm
- Primary source: Steam confirms the released Dazed Games title; it does not publish a permanent coordinate map.
- Community route reports agree on the quest → boss or task → hand-in → new destination structure and the Lighthouse-to-Volcano story order.
- Map colours, exact bearings, shop positions and combat statistics are intentionally excluded unless they can be checked against a current build.
